Following the success of the HALIFAX 2008 Conference, the LISBON 2010 "II Central & North Atlantic Conjugate Margins Conference" was, by every measure, an excellent technical and networking event.
As organizers, we were most pleased with the great response from colleagues from around the world, who gathered in Portugal for three days of intense thinking and discussion. The level and diversity of presentations brought us a renewed vision of the Atlantic margins evolution and their petroleum systems. The initial challenge of "Re-discovering the Atlantic, New winds for an old sea" has been fulfilled, thanks to the high-level contributions and participation of all the attendees.
We sincerely believe that new collaborative opportunities, both in academia and in industry, as well as amongst them, will develop in the near future. As stated at the Closing Ceremony, the best sign of success of this conference will be the increase of knowledge, potential awareness, exploration activities and finally hydrocarbon production in the Central and North Atlantic margins during the next decade. We’ll keep pursuing it!
A total of 96 presentations were given at the Conference: 41 Oral (including 5 Keynotes) and 55 Posters. The Conference was attended by 217 delegates, coming from 19 different countries, mostly European (70%) and the Americas (25%), with the largest delegations from Portugal, UK, Canada, USA, Norway and Brazil. Almost two thirds of the attendees represented 55 different petroleum industry and services/consultancy companies, while a quarter came from universities and research institutes, and the remainder from government agencies and departments. We were very pleased with the number of young students and special cash prizes were awarded by the Chairs of the Halifax 2008 conference to the four best student presentations.
A total of 45 delegates took part in two Field Trips, one in the Lusitanian Basin (Portugal) and the other in the Agadir Basin (Morocco), both receiving excellent feedback. The Core Workshop held at the National Oil Agency (DPEP), and the Short Course on Sequence Stratigraphy by Dr. Octavian Catuneanu were both fully subscribed (40 in total).
Our Gala Dinner, a seafood feast, preceded by a magnificent boat-trip along the Lisbon riverine area, was the social and networking highlight of the Conference.
We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our industry sponsors, without whom we simply could not have convened this event. We thank Petrobras, GALP Energia, Partex Oil & Gas, Statoil Angola, TGS, Porto Energy and ION for supporting us from the inception of the conference. We appreciate the efforts of all the members of all our committees and especially the student volunteers, all of whom gave much of their time to ensure that the event was well planned and ran as smoothly as possible.
As stated at the conference, all publications that are on the delegate´s Conference flash drive have been posted on our website and are available via the link below. We have taken the opportunity to update the documents with abstracts that were omitted.
We remind you that all the on-line publications may also be consulted using your SmartPhone, iPAD or PDA.

We again extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation to all of you who attended LISBON 2010, the companies and organizations who supported us (and you), our keynote speakers, field trip leaders and course instructors, and all the volunteers who generously gave their time and resources. A very special thank you is directed to David Brown and Grant Wach, organizers of the inaugural HALIFAX 2008 conference, who helped us enormously by providing information, data, suggestions and advice gained through their organizing of the Halifax conference. Together we created an event that we hope benefits everyone, and will be one more contribution towards future successful exploration in the basins of the Central and North Atlantic Conjugate Margins!
We would appreciate receiving from you any comments, ideas and suggestions based on your experiences at LISBON 2010. Photos from field trips and courses will be particularly welcomed, as well as those taken during coffee-breaks and other social events!
We hope to meet you all again at the DUBLIN 2012 Conference!
Sincerely,
